Molybdenum is a refractory metal primarily used as an alloying element to improve strength, corrosion and heat resistance in steel and superalloys, with secondary uses in catalysts, lubricants and electronics. It is a critical industrial input, with demand driven largely by stainless and high-strength low-alloy steel production, making its market closely tied to construction, manufacturing and petrochemical activity. Prices are driven by production and inventory levels, geographic concentration of mines (notably China, Chile and the U.S.), the share produced as a copper byproduct, processing/refining costs (MoO3/ferro-molybdenum), energy and freight costs, and broader macroeconomic and trade dynamics.
